Christmas Books - To Read or Not to Read?

Hello babes and happy December! With this month, I bring you a new blog format. (Not my first time, I know, but third time’s a charm.) Today we are discussing Christmas Books. I’ve seen a lot of people reading Christmas romance books lately on Booksta and BookTube. They all look so cute, basically like Hallmark movies but in books. However, as someone who doesn’t read 200 books a year, my question is are they worth the time?

If I could inhale books like I do Takis, sure I’d read a couple of Christmas books each year. But, as a bookish girlie with limited time and an ever-growing TBR, that doesn’t happen. For the past two years, I’ve tried to read a Christmas book each year. This brings me to two solid Christmas books since I haven’t gotten around to a third yet this year. Here’s a look at them…

In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren

my rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆

This book was my holiday read in 2022. I actually read it over Thanksgiving break to get into the Christmas spirit. I thought this book was really cute and pretty entertaining. The romance is between two childhood friends and had a bunch of cute Christmasy scenes. (I love a good snowball fight/romantic banter scene.) Where the problem came up for me was the dreaded time loop trope. For some reason, I just cannot stand the whole Groundhog Day situation. I feel like most of the time it just gets randomly thrown in to make the plot more interesting. However, Christina Lauren knows how to write a book, and this time I thought it was fairly entertaining, considering my usual distaste. I think the fact that it’s just a fun Christmas book helped too.

Lovelight Farms by B.K. Borison

my rating: ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆

Onto last year’s read, Lovelight Farms, and the whole series honestly, got really popular last year. I read it under the pretense of continuing the series, but I ended up being a little underwhelmed with the book compared to other rom-coms. However, the book is really cute and has some of my favorite tropes. We have friends to lovers, fake dating, and small town romance. It also takes place on a Christmas tree farm, which is literally the perfect holiday setting. I did like this book, and I know a lot of people who rated it higher, but I just wasn’t really into it.

So, should you read a Christmas book this season? Maybe. I think they are fun and can be really good books, but you might be better off just reading a regular book. If you want something seasonal, maybe try a book more Winter themed instead of Christmas. I’ve listed some good Winter recommendations below. That said, I will be reading another Christmas book this year. I’ve chosen The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year by Ally Carter. It is a new release that has both romance and mystery (so perfect for me.) I’ve heard good things, so fingers crossed.

xoxo,

taylor
