Cinderella Is Dead
You know when you finish a book and it’s all you can think about after? That was me when I finished Cinderella Is Dead by Kalynn Bayron. I have been so excited for pride month all year because it is an excuse, not that you need one, to dive into your lgbtqia+ tbr. I also am trying to get into fantasy because I’ve noticed booktube is in its fantasy era. I have barely read any fantasy, but I loved this book so maybe I should get more into it. Cinderella is Dead checked those two boxes as well as a POC author and main character. It is also very much a feminist story. We have no choice but to stan.
I want to use this small but mighty platform to talk about pride month for a second. This is my second pride month of being out as a bisexual. I consider pride month to be very important for our community as it helps to shine a light on us. I am a very lucky member of this community as I have a loving and accepting household, I pass as straight, I am cisgender, and I am White. It is also important that we privileged people remember the members of our community who are suffering due to stigmas against them. I could talk forever about this month and what it means to me, but I want to leave you with telling you about the Trevor Project. The Trevor Project is an organization that helps suicidal lgbtqia+ teens get the help that they need. I am going to link the website at the bottom of this post. Please check them out and support them in any way that you can, even if it’s just a like on Instagram. Love is love!
Alright, now what you’re here for. Long ago in the world of Cinderella Is Dead, Cinderella’s fairytale story happened. Now, the kingdom, which is run by a tyrannical king, uses Cinderella as an example of the perfect girl, kind, beautiful, and obedient. Once a year the king hosts a ball, and all the young women of the country must arrive and be chosen by a man. If they are not chosen, they will be sent off to work as slaves for the palace. Sophia would rather marry her friend, Erin, than be married off to a man that will control her life. She dreads the day of the ball, but what comes must come. There is much more of a summary on the back, but I think it reveals a little too much. I’ll leave you with this.
The writing of this book was so entertaining and easy to follow. The world was easy to understand due to my prior knowledge of the fairy tale. However, while the world was based on the tale, the author added so many amazing details and made a world of her own. I was never bored in this book, and the adventure had me saying “one more chapter” and then staying up all night to finish. This book is for anyone who loves action, adventure, and strong women. It is a YA book, but there are a few pretty violent scenes. They don’t go into too much detail, but I still recommend checking the trigger warnings and making sure you will be okay with it. I think this book is probably 12/13+ depending on the person. When I finished this book I almost cried, not because it was sad but because I was so sad that it was over. Do yourself a favor, and read this book. We can obsess over it together.
Alrighty babes that’s all I have for you today. I know it’s been a while since I’ve been on here. I’ve been so busy between school and work, but I will definitely try to be really good about posting this summer. If you want to stay up to date with my reading on a day to day basis make sure to follow my Instagram and Goodreads.
xoxo, taylor
