The Seven Year Slip
Hello, my friends. Today I bring to you a book that broke my heart and stitched it back together again. The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston was actually my book club’s pick for the month of November. I was a little skeptical going in because it is considered a magical romance which means there is some magical element involved in the romance book. This is not my preferred genre because I just don’t love magic in the real world. If I want a magical book I’m just going to read fantasy. However, this book did not disappoint.
Clementine (could you ask for a better name)has recently moved into her deceased aunt’s apartment in New York City. She and her aunt were very close, and now living in her apartment is reminding her of all her grief. One day Clementine comes home and finds a man in her aunt’s apartment who is living seven years in the past. Her aunt always said the apartment was magical, but she hadn’t thought like this.
Iwan and Clementine are actually perfect for each other. He is so amazing and treats her with such care. Oh and did I mention his nickname for her is Lemon? And let me tell you every time he said that name I swooned big time. He’s also a chef, so if all that didn’t convince you I don’t know what will. However, aside from being a cute couple, Clementine and Iwan also felt so real. I really enjoyed going through Clementine’s journey of grieving with her, and loved how real her character felt. Along with grief, she also was dealing with challenging aspects of her work life as well as, obviously, her love life. I almost called Iwan the perfect man earlier on, but I caught myself because he too was working through some stuff. Although we didn’t get inside his head like Clementine, I definitely could appreciate the challenges he was facing as well.
Something that made this book so enjoyable was Poston’s writing. She had beautiful, atmospheric descriptions, and this book bordered on literary fiction in terms of the writing style. Her writing reminded me a lot of Emily Henry whom I love so so much. Poston’s writing added an extra layer to the story than any old romance book. I felt so much like I was there in the apartment with Clementine or walking down the street on a New York City summer day.
This book was the first one in a while to make me cry. I was so overwhelmed with emotions, and when I finished it I laid down hugging the book and staring at my ceiling wishing I could start it all over again. I rated this book five stars, but that is truly not enough for how amazing this book was. If I could give it six stars I would. Do yourself a favor and read this book. (Then DM me because we have a lot to talk about)
xoxo,
taylor
